Hi I have just been reading the book KIM which is the story of Kim Newcombe. What a great but sad time in motorcycling, The shame of Kim’s death was what could have been had he lived. Was the Konig really that good?
    cheers

    • hello shane. the konig was really a good engine. me and Kenny birch raced at the world championship sidecar event with it many times. it was very fast and was really good for the sidecar events as it was very light weight. it was made for racing speedboats. it got cold water all the time ?? in and out. we had to have a radiator ??? temperature was the lifeline for this engine. I destroyed some engines with poor cooling ?? it was sometimes very scary as when you were flat out it would sieze up without warning. me and Kenny birch and peter sales raced at GP level and had some good results . 1973/4. we used shaflietner six speed gearboxs which also gave big trouble. they would blow up without warning, ?? that was more scary than the engine blowing up as the rear wheel would lock up solid and stay locked. the clutch was always locked so it was one big skid. at 150 MPH that is no joke. we did get 5th world champs with it but had it kept going we should have got second to Klaus enders works BMW. I did two seasons with BMW rennsport long strke engine but could not match the works BMW s of the top germans enders shauze , aurbacher. luthringhauser etc ??? still I had the pleasure of racing with the best guy at that time. jeff gawley.

  4. Hello Jeff,
Not sure if you will receive this but here goes.
Most of our racing photographs were lost.
Long story and won’t bore you with it.
We are managing to get some back through
The internet. Would you be willing to send me
Some copies of the ones that you have of the
First half of the 1973 season, including thexTT ?
    Regards
    Vanessa
