Another fine bike on the VMCC Dorset stand at the 2005 Bristol Classic Bike Show.  This is a 1943 122cc James M.L. (Military Lightweight). Delivery of these to the British Army began in March 1943. They were initially sent to the airborne forces and commando units.   During the D-Day landings on the Normandy beaches they were used as a mechanical sheepdog to round up and direct columns of troops. It was during these operations that it is thought it acquired its nickname of “Clockwork Mouse”.
