1941 Matchless G3L Pictures

Thanks to Danny Maes of Belgium for this picture of his 1941 Matchless G3L.  Unfortunately the bike loses some oil, whcih is always a problem when you keep your bike on a marble floor.  He’s asking for any suggestions as to what he should do. For heavily leaking engines, my top tip is to make sure that you keep putting more oil in – and in this situation I would also recommend the use of a rug.

  1. Drain the oil from the sump and tank after each ride to prevent wet sumping.

    Put a neoprene ‘O’ ring on the tank and sump bolts so that they do not need to be very tight to provide a good seal, this prevents over-tightening and stripping threads.

    Replace the chain case seal with ‘T’ section rubber placing join at 0100 position on rear radius of case (will not leak if done properly and no silicon required. You will need a length of ‘T’ section approx 90cm in length.

    Slide a piece of 40mm UPVC plumbing pipe 10cm long on throttle with ‘OIL’ written on it to remind you to refill it before a ride.

    Whilst sounds tediuos saves a lot of work later cleaning floors and washing clutches- works for me.
