A Connaught.  I’m afraid I know nothing about this bike – perhaps someone can enlighten me?  This one was seen at the 2005 Calne Motorcycle Meet. Many thanks to Kit Line for getting in touch.  Kit was very excited to see the photograph of a Connaught as they were built by his Great Grandfather, John Rowland, in his workshop in Birmingham.  Kit’s Grandfather remembered the first one. His father crashing into the kitchen shouting ‘i’ts firing’. He tipped the contents of a bag of sugar (much to Kit’s great grandmother’s annoyance) out onto the table, scribbled a number plate on it’s blue paper and then tore up the road in a cloud of smoke. He also told him of the time he got caught in the tram lines in an outfit and having to ride all the way to the depot…..

  1. This is interesting information for me knowing that the bike was manufactured in Birmingham around 1910 as I have a photograph taken in 1919 of my grandfather and great grandfather posing on a Connaught Combination. My great grandfather although living in the North East of England when the photo was taken was from Kidderminster, a few miles from Birmingham.
