Many thanks to Jeffrey Miller for this picture. It shows his wife Trish’s Great Uncle Alfred Friedel. He was born around 1900 in Germany. The photo was taken sometime around 1930 in Kahl/Main Germany. The motorcycle is a German built Standard. Alfred’s expression says it all.
Jerry’s family believe that he was killed on this motorcycle at 33 years of age.
Based on the photo here www.autogallery.org.ru/k/s/standardBSS500_Hannes.jpg of a 1928 Standard BSS 500 ((supersport), (MAG, 1-cyl, 4 stroke, OHV, 496cc, 20/22hp)), you can see lots of similarities with Alfred’s bike, as well as some differences. Perhaps someone out there can identify exactly which model we have here.

    Hello,

this is deffinetily not 1928. It is late 1929 or 1930. In 1928 there was still TIGER front fork and diffrent exhauast. This BS with the license build CASTLE fork was introduce in second half of 1929. The BS500 Standard was the best selled sport motorcycle for 1928 in Germany. Then in 1929 they goes a step back because of the IMPERIA 500H which was cheaper then Standard. Incredible motorcycle and you are right “Alfred’s expression says it all.”
