1954 MV Agusta 175 Super Sport Monoalbero “CSS” to make appearance

1954 MV Agusta 175 Super Sport Monoalbero “CSS” to make appearance on August 21, 2011 at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

This is one of the most important motorcycles in MV Agusta history and it will be displayed at The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, August 21, 2011. It has enormous charm due to its superb performance, but also thanks to the design of the gas tank it gives the bike its nickname Disco Volante (flying saucer). The Super Sport was the dream of all sports bike enthusiasts and was often used for racing. The “Earles” type front fork is one of the main distinguishing characteristics of this model. This Disco Volante CSS was found in unrestored, original condition in 2006 by Mr. Kohs’ restorers in Italy (see photo). Mr. Kohs states, “the 175 CSS is perhaps the most replicated bike in the motorcycle market today. What happens is the bad guys take a Disco Volante CS with hydraulic forks and change it to an Earls fork and then stamp an extra S in the crankcase to make SS. Why, because a beautifully restored Disco Volante CS in today’s market is worth about one third of the value of an SS. The only sure way to know if the bike is real is to have the frame and engine number verified by the Agusta Museum.”

Kohs said, “we call this bike our casino bike. I have only seen one CSS for sale in fourteen years of searching and the price was $50,000. There are some things not worth the price at that moment and this was one of them. One day my restorer in Italy sent me an e-mail saying he has found a real CSS for sale in Napoli. He tells me the bike is complete and that I shouldn’t look at the exterior because the bike can be restored to original. He says the problem is that the engine won’t turn over and the owner won’t make any guarantee that the motor is good. And the owner won’t let anyone look inside until they buy the bike. His philosophy is quite simple…he’s looking for a gambler. He’s asking 8.000 Euros for the bike and if the engine is good its worth many times that price. If the engine is bad then we have an unrestored chassis and little chance of finding a correct engine let alone the fact that the engine number won’t match the frame number. If there was an SS engine available it had already been used to make a CS a CSS. So the question was…”do you want to roll the dice?” Thus we call it the casino bike.”

When asked how did he rationalize buying it, Kohs said, “I figured the odds of ever finding another SS were very high and my odds were 50/50 the engine was good. I rather enjoyed the owner’s rationale also. So I just laughed and said let’s go for it. Nedo, my restorer, was a nervous wreck until the bike arrived. Immediately Nedo and his partner Giorgio took the head off the engine and found that the piston was just stuck and that the inside of the engine looked like it had never been used. The rest of the bike also suggested that it had very little use. I had won again. But look at what we bought and what it looks like today. Nedo, Giorgio and Loreno are the best……I just smile every time I look at their work.” The Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance will be open to the public at 10:30 am on Sunday the 21st of August
