I obtained this photo in the belief that it depicted the German racing driver Rudolf Caracciola (his name has been handwritten on the back of the photo). During 1922-1924 he competed on an NSU and a Garelli in a handful of German events. I have been informed by motorcycle aficionados that the bike in the centre of the picture is neither an NSU or a Garelli. One suggestion is that it might be a Sunbeam or some other British bike. In light of this information I now have doubts as to whether the rider is in fact Caracciola.

Can anyone shed any light on the type of bike, the identity of the rider or the location/event?

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thank you.
Simon.

I found this TWN in a barn. It is complete and has just one owner since 1950. I will start to renovate this spring.

Triumph-Werke Nürnberg AG or TWN, was German bicycle and motorcycle company. In 1886, Siegfried Bettmann founded the Triumph bicycle factory in Coventry, England, and in 1896 he founded a second bicycle factory in his native Nuremberg, Germany, under the same Triumph name. Both factories branched out into making motorcycles: the Coventry factory in 1902 and the Nuremberg factory in 1903.

Dur to brand confusion, the German arm of the business was renamed TWN in 1913.

The BDG 250 you can see in this picture was made from 1949 to 1957 and boasts a 12hp 248cc two stroke engine capable of 68mph.

The Honda NV400SP is a domestic Japanese model that was never officially exported. However a few made it abroad anyway. I bought mine in UK with only 17000 km on the clock, and rode it 3000 km home to Norway. It is completely original and in perfect mechanical shape. The bike is very similar to the European VT500E, however the NV400SP has shorter stroke, and that makes it more ‘lively’. The engine has very low vibrations, and the bike is a good performer over long distances.

Many thanks to Michael Gregor for these pictures of his 1983 Honda NV400SP
