Looks like you and I in the same boat. I bought this same year, make and type in 2019 after this guy tried to turn it into a cafe racer. It may have been a turnkey at one time; but, he did a number on her. The restoration is going slowly, but almost there. This guy did the same thing as your guy. So, the seat is useless (I’m gonna keep it as a backup for my ‘80 xs650 special which has same specs).

The voltage regulator is trash and I’m replacing the points with new copper. Oh, and I gotta get a new title because this guy never got a title and neither did the mechanic who sold it to him. I have checked North America stolen databases & nothing comes up. So, I’m gonna put a mechanic lien on it & go from there.

Saw your post and wanted to ask if you know how rare ‘79 classic xs650 is. I found one that was at the start of a cafe conversion and decided to restore it. I think I restored most of it except what they did to back grab. Seat is useless now. Shame
