Bill Lomas - World Champion Road Racer

Bill Lomas -  World Champion Road Racer by Bill Lomas

Designed and published in 2004 by Redline Books.

ISBN 09531311 9 8

I have spent Christmas 2005 devouring this book! It is a fascinating insight into the drama and personalities of the road racing circuit in the post war years. I have always felt that the sign of a good autobiography is that it leaves the reader feeling like they were there - and that is certainly the case with this book. I have to admit to being far too young to be fully versed in the folklore and faces of this period of motorsport, but having just closed the book on the final chapter, and I feel like I know Bill Lomas, Dickie Dale, Fergus Anderson, and any number of colourful characters.

This book isn’t a list of race results. It is a vibrant and exciting account of what it was like to race fantastic motorbikes amongst other fantastic riders right up until Bill's retirement in 1958. It is written from a human perspective and is full of humour and a great deal of warmth.

Bill Lomas started racing in the years immediately after the war while still a schoolboy. He went on to be a works rider for Royal Enfield, Velocette, AJS, Matchless, NSU, MV Agusta, Benelli and Moto Guzzi and in fact rode 29 different road racing machines! There are some fascinating stories in this book, including his experience with what must be the world's fastest BSA Bantam!

If you have ever wondered what it must have been like to be a successful road racer, then look no further – this book is one you really must read.
