The Mighty Interceptor
The Story of the Royal Enfield Interceptor 1962 - 1970

The Mighty Interceptor by Andrew Stait

This is a book dedicated to the Royal Enfield Interceptor.  I met Andrew at the Malvern Classic Bike Show this year and was really impressed by this book.  It is packed with unique information and photographs that you will find nowhere else.  As the owner of a very nice Interceptor himself, this book as been a true labour of love for Andrew and he can be very proud with the results of his hard work.  This is what the author has to say about the book:

"For the past year, I have been writing a book that I have called the 'Mighty Interceptor'. I am glad to say the book is now finished and it runs at 216 pages long.

The first chapter traces the bikes origins back to the 500 twin in 1948 then all through the model changes to the Interceptors introduction in 1960. Told by its original test rider Nigel Buckingham, then the book goes through the stages of the Interceptors development from 1962 - 1970. Finishing with a chapter dedicated to the 800 and this story is told by the two men who developed and test rode the bike.

The next chapter is about the Test Riders and their own accounts of working in the factory and test riding the bikes. Chris Ludgate and Richard Steven's used the Interceptor in competition, road racing, sprinting and hill climbing with a fair amount of success. Together with Ray Knight I have set these experiences aside in a chapter called Racing Days.

The next chapter is about the factories where the bikes where built, with some pictures taken inside of the production lines and crankshaft balancing.

The book finished with 16 contemporary road tests. I have illustrated the book with 157 photographs and pictures, over 40 of these are reproduced from the private albums of former Royal Enfield workers."

The book is now available, retailing at £14.95.

Postage is £2.99 in the UK £3.50 Europe and £6.50 Rest of the World.

If you would like to order a copy, then please get in touch with Andrew by and he will be pleased to hear from you.  He accepts personal cheques, paypal, international money orders (made payable in sterling) and of course the good old green stuff.
