Goodwood Revival
September 2005, Goodwood
Where do I start! For those of you who enjoy classic
bikes (and cars), there could not be a better event than the Goodwood
Revival. It is the nearest thing to experiencing the heyday of motorsport
between the 1940's and the 1960's. For those of you fortunate enough
to be as young as me, this is the only way to experience it. For
those a little older, it is the best way to remember it. Everything
at the circuit, from the music to the food, from the costumes to the vehicles
and from the racing to fighter planes dogfighting above, is meticulously
recreated from the golden era. You can buy ice cream from genuine
1950s Bedford ice cream vans, or bacon baps from an authentic ex-army
NAAFI wagon. Aged ambulances and fire engines are on display as they would
have been more than 40 years ago, the only difference being that modern
emergency vehicles are hiding in the wings to take over if needed. Even
the course cars are museum pieces. It's a great sight, and I wholeheartedly
recommend it to everyone. I've taken a few picures to try and give
you all a feel for what goes on at the event - I hope you like the pics.
For those interested in the racing, the results of the Barry Sheene Memorial
Trophy Race (and what racing it was!) held over two days were:
First Race
1 - 1962 - Manx Norton 500 - Wayne Gardner
2 - 1961 - Manx Norton 500 - Jamie Whitham
3 - 1961 - Manx Norton 500 - Duncan Fitchett
Second Race
1 - 1961 - Manx Norton 500 - Duncan Fitchett
2 - 1961 - Manx Norton 500 - Jamie Whitham
3 - 1960 - Manx Norton 500 - Chas Mortimer
Final Aggregate Result
1 - 1961 - Manx Norton 500 - Duncan Fitchett
2 - 1961 - Manx Norton 500 - Jamie Whitham
3 - 1960 - Manx Norton 500 - Chas Mortimer
