Thanks Tom Muir of Oz, for this picture of the 1924 Douglas TS he restored (and sold) last year. This model (almost identical to the World War 1 models) had no clutch. The two speed gear handle up thru the tank is an early Douglas giveaway. You changed gear by decompressing the motor and pulling the handle back or forward and then letting the motor pick up again.
